Year of the Nurse
— (2021)

Badge Design

In honor of Florence Nightingale’s 200th birth anniversary, 2020 was designated as the International Year of the Nurse by The World Health Assembly. This initiative celebrated nurses, highlighted their challenges, and advocated for increased investments in the nursing and midwifery workforce. This badge was commisioned by the HSE to honor the tireless work nurses do on a daily basis.

The resulting design features two interlocking hearts forming the letter "N" — symbolizing the indispensable qualities of cooperation, perseverance, and stamina intrinsic to the nursing profession. While the hand-rendered style for the mark subtly alludes to the caring and compassionate nature of this vocation.

On a personal level, this project held extra significance as a loving tribute to my mother — a nurse herself for nearly three decades. Her enduring model of empathic commitment and selfless service reflected the ethos I aimed to enshrine through the badge's timeless design.

This commemorative emblem honored the persevering achievements of nurses and the compassionate resilience they embody daily, even amidst immense challenges, as they devote their lives to safeguarding others.
