Year of the Nurse
2020 was designated by The World Health Assembly as the International Year of the Nurse in honor of the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. It was an initiative brought in to celebrate the work of nurses, highlight the challenging conditions they often face, and advocate for increased investments in the nursing and midwifery workforce. With 2020 being the year the pandemic took hold, the HSE decided to postpone it until 2021. This badge was created to honor the tireless work nurses do on a daily basis. The design consists of two interlocking hearts to form the letter ‘N’ for nurse. It symbolises the cooperation, perseverance and stamina required to be a nurse. While the hand rendered style used for the mark alludes to the caring nature of the profession. This badge has been dedicated to my mother, a nurse of nearly 30 years.
